The estimated total number of downloads of global AI-type applications in Apple Store and Google Google Play reached 280 million in May 2025, a decrease of 16.4 per cent from April 2024. Despite the fall in downloads, the overall demand for AI applications remained strong.ChatGPT, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Bean Pack and PixVerse ranked five downloads, contributing approximately 142.8 million downloads, accounting for 51 per cent of the global AI application downloads.
ChatGPT, the world ‘ s most popular AI application, continued to lead in May, downloading about 52 million times a month (reference April data, Backlinko). Its powerful functions in the areas of text generation, code debugging and data analysis have attracted a wide range of users, with more than 3 million paying business users as of June 2025.
Google Gemini ranked second in its multi-modular AI function (text, image, voice), and its appeal was further enhanced by the AI update at the I/O General Assembly in May. The model of DeepSeek, China’s original company, had briefly surpassed ChatGPT in January, becoming America’s most popular free AI application for App Store, but fell to 51 in February.
Byte-jumping bean buns entered the top three of the world in April and remained strong in May. Its image generation and text-processing capabilities, especially the localization advantages of the Chinese market, have contributed to the growth of downloads. PixVerse, as an image and video generation application, attracted creative users to the top five with high-quality visual content creation skills, demonstrating the potential of a generating AI in the visual field.
ChatGPT and Google Gemini’s leading positions have benefited from their brand effects and technological maturity, while the rapid rise of DeepSeek and bean bags demonstrates China’s AI ecological potential. In 2025, as more open-source models and visual generation tools become available, AI applications may further penetrate the fields of education, electricians and content creation.
